I Was Just Wonderin'...

No Better Story-Teller than Buddy Baker!

Category: I Was Just Wonderin'...

With his special paint scheme this week in Atlanta, if David Reutimann wins, I wonder if we'll call it a win for Toyota or for Mitsubishi.

I also read that Carl Edwards will be running a "retro" paint scheme for Scott's to mark the fifth anniversary of his win there in '05. I wonder how old something has to be to be considered "retro".

While we're talking about paint schemes, I wonder if they went out of their way to call Mark Martin's special scheme this week a "blue and black" scheme, intentionally avoiding the reverse of that which would make his car sound like a 3500-pound bruise.

NASCAR still isn't sure what happened with the caution lights last week, causing them to come on randomly. Remember that commercial a few years ago where the guy was flipping the light switch in his house and didn't know what it went to, and the garage door was opening and closing on top of his neighbor's car?

I dunno how I feel about making a big deal about 200 wins for HMS and comparing it as "the second most wins of all-time" to Richard Petty. The King is one man, and HMS has had how many drivers contribute to that total? I think we should stick to celebrating that it's the most wins by a race team in the modern era and leave the King's 200 wins out of it.

Remember my mention of Danica and the Festivus Pole last week? It garnered the attention of this guy who emailed me:

Good Day.Sales
My name is Rev Chris Youngson and i am sending this email in regards to order (festivus pole) and i will like you to send me an  reply back with the types and sizes that you have in stock for sale ?what type of Credit Card do you accept for Payment
Hear from you soon... Rev.Chris youngson.

I wonder if anyone else has unfollowed a certain driver's wife on Twitter, uncomfortable about her private tweets. TMI, Amanda... way, way, way TMI.

Another suspension for substance abuse? I wonder what makes anyone cocky enough to think, "Oh, they won't catch ME..." Then again, if it's addiction rather than recreational, maybe the thought is more along the lines of panic. Kinda sad in a way.

Jeff Gordon once said he'd like to race at least until Ella was old enough to remember him racing when she was older. Now that there's another one on the way, I wonder if he'll tack on another five or six years so baby #2 will have memories, too.

I wonder what will be more fun at Martinsville this year, the NASCAR race or the "Story-telling by NASCAR's Greats" on March 27th. The panel will include Harry Gant, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Junior Johnson, Buddy Baker, and Ned Jarrett.

And I also wonder if there's any better story than that of Buddy Baker in the ambulance when he flew out the back and went rolling down the race track strapped to the gurney, waving his hand to the oncoming cars? No, sir, there just can't be a better one than that. Tell us again, Buddy... please tell us that story again!   [Ed Note: I looked for a link to this story at time of publication but was unsuccessful. Happy to say I found it. Edited, but the meat of the story is there. Guaranteed laughter! -C]

Ya know I have often wondered about the "retro" thing too... the local radio station here has an "all 80' retro" hour at lunch! Love it! ;)

I can only hope that Jeff G will prolong his retirement and race many, many more years!! I for one do not look forward to the day that the 24 car is not driven by Jeff.... it will be so odd.

Best wishes to all in Atlanta!

At my age, Retro is anything that happened one day ago :)

Who is suspended for substance abuse, I haven't read about it yet.

I wonder if Spring will really arrive in 15 days, or will it keep snowing up here?

I also wonder if JPM will get his first win this weekend at an oval.

In my opinion something shouldn't be called "retro" until at least 20 years have passed. It also implies that it is being recycled by a new generation. So, if I was around in the 60's when tie-dye shirts were all the rage it wouldn't be retro for me to wear them in 2010, it would only be retro for my kids if they embraced that style.

@highbanks24,
I have mixed emotions about Jeff retiring. It will be a sad day and I will miss him being on the track and it will definitely take some of my passion away but, at the same time it will kind of be liberating. The best way for me to explain it is that when Baltimore lost the Colts it was a sad day. In the following years I found myself able to watch any game, be free to support any team, and be more objective than I ever thought possible. Of course now that we have the Ravens I am convinced that the refs and the NFL are always against us LOL. So all I am saying is perhaps I will be able to enjoy the races on a totally different level once Jeff retires. One thing for sure, I will definitely save a lot of money on t-shirts, jackets and diecasts and there will probably never be another driver that I alighn with so closely. Jeff is the one that got me into NASCAR so I doubt any driver will ever be as important to me.

Personally, I'm still wondering when Motley Crue became "classic rock." Did I get old when I wasn't looking or something?

Carol, if you ever get the chance, ask Buddy Baker how he split his pants at the Talladega museum. His story never quite matched the story told by the librarian. hehehe

@rdfox,
Bands become "classic" as soon as they no longer appeal to the 13-21 demographic. Yes, sadly, Motley Crue classic rock. And yes you (and I) got old when we weren't looking.

not to get all political here, but with news that the Census Bureau sponsoring Biffle for 3 raes, and all the radio and tv spots I have been seeing, I have to wonder-

Where is the Census Bureau getting their advertising budget from? especially during a recession?

I don't wonder about Jeffie retiring, what I wonder is when the heck is Jimmie gonna retire????

My favorite old time tale:
"and that's when Cale commenced to beating on my fist with his face." -Bobby Allison talking about Cale Yarborough and the 79 Daytona Fight. :)

Eddo,
They put a spin on the Census thing this way and justified the "investment":

"For every one percent increase in census mail response, taxpayers will save an estimated $85 million. Those funds would otherwise be required to send census takers to collect responses in person from households that don't mail back the form. Census data are used to reapportion congressional seats to states and directly affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to state, local and tribal governments."

But the way I look at it, of all the things they're spending my tax dollars on, this one I kinda don't mind.

@Bill B I understand what you saying, and I agree with ya. In some ways it would definitely make my Sunday afternoon's stress free... lol As I always get all nervous, excited... etc... when the race starts... always hoping that 24 will be in VL. Like you, I know that I will never have the same type of dedication to another driver as I have Jeff. I do like JJ, and would watch and wish him well.

@ eddo.... No... its when is Chad going to retire?? lol He's the thorn in everyone's side! Seriously, not to take anything away from JJ, he's one heck of a driver!
