Danica's Missed Opportunity: The Festivus Pole

Bill Weber says he hopes to continue sports announcing, and he’s waiting for NBC to get back from the Olympics to see what motor sports opportunities they might have. Um… I’ve got nothing to wonder here except why I suddenly have Susan Boyle’s voice singing in my head, “I dreamed a dream…”

And speaking of our friends across the pond, thanks to a new TV deal, race fans in the UK will again get to see NASCAR live. I wonder if the press releases there, though, call it a new telly deal.

There’s a Talladega test session in March that is opened to the public (on the 18th, starts at 9am). I wonder if there won’t be more fans there to watch testing than there were at Fontana to watch a race.

David Ragan got to go up in the air with the Thunderbirds yesterday. What? They didn’t pick Danica? I wonder if she was busy or something.

I wonder why problems on the 88 team aren’t a concern until they show up on other HMS teams, too. Junior’s got a broken axle? Yeah, well, it was his own fault for a pit mistake… oh, what? Wait! Call the media! There are problems with the axles on the 48 team??  Yes, it’s also the 24 and 5, but if it had been just the 88, what are the chances this kind of coverage would have been?

Cale Gale’s birthday is March 5th. I wonder if anyone else sees his name and (even if for just a moment) thinks “Cole Trickle”. I don’t know why that is, but it just sounds like a made-up name from a racing movie. Sorry, Cale!

Reut has a new sponsor with Tums. As the only heartburn remedy suggested by doctors for pregnant women, I wonder if the current baby boom has put stock in Tums in an upward swing. I also wonder if the 00 team is suddenly popular with the NASCAR ladies who keep stopping by just to say hi… oh, and mind if I take a bottle of your sponsor product?

I wonder who the mastermind is behind the brilliant change at Bristol. No, we’re not going to resurface again to put it back the way it was; we’re simply going to make the appearance (though we know that you know that we know that you know it’s all a guise) of adding safety to the track. We’ll make the SAFER barriers bigger in the turns, and oh, wait, what’s that? It takes away a racing line through the corners and may cause the cars to bump into each other and wreck a lot more? Oh, gosh, well… some things just can’t be helped, I s’pose.

LVMS has easy-pay for 2011 tickets! Not just spread over three months, but they’re giving you eight months to pay! Three installments, but they’re due April 15th, July 1st, and October 1st. I wonder why none of the tax-preparer companies involved in NASCAR have joined up with race tracks to offer refund-anticipation deals.

When NASCAR took Dave Blaney’s car last week (and in support of the governing body, that car qualified fifth and led three laps, yet still opted to park early), one quote that I found most curious was that “…the sanctioning body cannot try to ‘outguess the teams’ to determine who the start-and-park cars are every weekend.” Really? It’s that big of a mystery? I wonder, though, if NASCAR isn’t smiling about the quick effect of their message when three S&P cars returned to the track last week after initially pulling into the garage for what they’d planned to be the end of their day. The whole scenario sounded like kids trying to ditch school, being caught in the hallway, and then making the excuse that they were merely getting a drink of water before returning to class.

And one more thing (or two) that I was just wonderin'...

Bobby has a new sponsor, The Wagner Companies. We’re happy for the sponsor dollars for the TRG #71 car, but I wonder how they got the legal rights to say they are the manufacturer of the Festivus Pole. Are they the exclusive rights holder to make Festivus Poles? And if I find a Festivus Pole somewhere else and it doesn’t have their name on it, is it then a knock-off?

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t wonder aloud… How did Danica’s people miss the opportunity to nab that sponsor for themselves? Imagine the commercials… no, wait… don’t.

LOL at the Festivus Pole sponsorship! One of the best Seinfeld episodes ever. "Festivus, a holiday for the rest of us." - George Costanza.

Festivus, Schmestivus. A holiday isn't a holiday unless it's on a Monday -- to give you an extra day to get home from the races!

Count your blessings -- at least you know which governor is going to do "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" at the race track(s) in YOUR home state. For Watkins Glen...well, it's in a bit of a state of flux, right now.

Lemme get this straight: Bill Weber is in NBC's Rolodex. All of their sportscasters (and then some) are at the Olympics. And he has to wait 'til they get BACK before he can ask them if they have any work for him???

I'm wondering if maybe he already has his answer.

Know this...the man is a heckuva magician -- he's already made his NASCAR broadcasting career disappear.

Just like Alka Seltzer and Jimmy Means back in the day...antacid sponsors at the race track are always a good deal. Seriously -- have you eaten the food at some of those places?

I realize the whole "start and park" phenomenon is a question of economics, but I'm with NASCAR on this one: When you set up a _two-car_ team to S&P, that's milking the situation. When you do it while squeezing out guys like Casey Mears who desperately want to get into the Top-35 and race full time, I'm sorry, that's just wrong.

I've said it before: If NASCAR wants to eliminate S&P, they should require that all teams complete at least one-third of the advertised distance (about two fuel-stops) at above-minimum speed in order to get any money or points from their effort. The only exceptions would be a wreck or catastrophic engine failure, either of which would consume any financial benefit of S&P.

PATIENCE NOW!!

LOL @ Festivus! I love Seinfield! I can still sit and watch the reruns over and over... and it never gets old!

Bill Weber?? Isn't he a magician?? (lol) Just wondering!

I had forgotten all about the 88 team's axle problems! I guess in the midst of the media storm surrounding the 48's win, and the 24's blown engine, it must have just slipped my mind. Poor Jr, he gets no attention.... its such a shame.

Looking forward to Vegas!!

If na$car doesn't want S&P happening then all they have to do is change the rules(not like they're inexperienced at that)until then, I say Start & Park away

@ Carol:

Actually, I beleive what Bristol is doing is extending the SAFER barrier down the straights, not making it "bigger" in the turns. This narrows up the turn exit a bit, which might affect some driver's lines. On the other hand, tho, you yourself have wondered why there should be any concrete wall not covered by a SAFER barrier (an idea I agree with), so you should not complain if Bristol adds to theirs.

I don't know where you got the idea I was complaining about the Bristol change, though I suppose "brilliant" might be a word I may use in a sarcastic way. This time, though, it's most sincere!

Oops, I thought you were being sarcastic also.

@ Carol,

Sorry - the bit about the "guise of an appearance of safety" misled me as to your intentions. I think we're all in agreement that more SAFER barriers is better :-)

John
