CHEERS to the annual Bo-Dyn Bobsled Challenge, but JEERS that they didn’t move it to Omaha this year. There are snow hills piled up at the corner of every intersection and they could have easily collected enough to make a bobsled mountain. Besides, it would give Boris a new challenge.

CHEERS to Jimmie and Chandra Johnson expecting their first child in July. Probably a woman thing to have counted the months, but Jimmie won September 27th, October 11th, and October 17th. I wonder if we’ll see a baby named after Dover, Fontana, or Charlotte.

CHEERS to Steve and Jessica Park, too, on the birth of Jaden Robert. I wonder if they’ll call him J.R. And while we’re at it, CHEERS to Shannon Spake (and Mr. Spake, Jerry McSorley) on the arrival of their twins Liam and Brady. Man, what is in that NASCAR water?

CHEERS to one more, the birth of Mikaella Castroneves, and the picture that Helio posted because even behind the mask, you can see the bursting proud smile of her dad.

CHEERS to the Garage Sale at NASCAR.com, but JEERS to the claim that everything is 20% off, when there's a bunch of new Danica stuff that is clearly not on sale. Don’t worry, it was just research. I wasn’t shopping.

CHEERS to the final tally of $1.8 million donated by the NASCAR Foundation. And CHEERS to all of the race fans that together contributed more than 10,000 hours of volunteer work. This should have been bigger news.

CHEERS to JJ, AJ, and JPM in the Rolex 24 at Daytona race along with Paul Menard, Jamie McMurray, and Bobby Labonte. CHEERS , also, to the first feeling that the off-season will be over before we know it. Thirty-three cars will be testing at “The Roar Before the Rolex 24.”

CHEERS to all of those drivers attending the Preseason Thunder Fan Fest for autographs and fan interaction, but JEERS that it’s not the event it used to be. I can’t yet decide if it’s a good or bad thing that reservations are required in advance for some of the driver’s autographs. I guess it’s a good thing so there won’t be sadness at that point of cut off, but whatever happened to the days of signing until the fans were gone? It’s not a race where there could be 100,000 people. The max anyone will sign is 250.

CHEERS to another sign that Daytona is just around the corner…The third week of January in Scottsdale, Arizona, baby, and it’s Barrett Jackson and the greatest collection of cars for sale that you’ll find anywhere. If you’ve never spent the weekend on the couch watching, do it this year. It’s free, it’s warm, and isn’t it better than shoveling snow?

CHEERS to celebrating the life of DJ Richardson, rear tire changer for the 29 team, at a memorial scheduled for this Saturday, Jan 9th. Members of the NASCAR community are asked to dress in their race-day crew shirts, and I can’t imagine how that will look, or the comfort it will be to his family to see how much he meant to the NASCAR world.

And finally,

CHEERS to the best news I read all week, that Red Farmer is getting better. I could tell you the details, but I can’t imagine anything is better than his wife’s own words: Joan told the media, “They’re pumping him full of antibiotics and he’s starting to get sassy again.” She went on to say that he’ll be out of the hospital after being treated for double pneumonia, soon. “The nurses are getting tired of listening to him complain about the food.”

On a personal note, thanks to everyone (via Facebook and Twitter) who offered kind words of support the past ten days as we thought we were looking at Sugar the cat's last days. We now speculate that she's had a (second) stroke, and that's likely what the problem was six months ago, too. But she is now mobile again, jumping up on the couch, napping on the DVR, drinking out of the toilet (yeah, we're blaming the dingo for teaching her that), and almost back to eating her regular diet.  -Carol

LOL at the naming the baby after the race track. Sounds like that "4 Christmases" movie where Robert Duvall "named each child after the city in which it was conceived".. Orlando, Dallas (and I can't remember the other one).

Carol, what happened inthat Preseason Thunder paragraph, wereyou in a hurryor was yourspace bar malfunctioning?

It's a beautiful thing when the Superbowl is the Sunday before Daytona. There's no down time between the end of football and the beginning of NASCAR.

@Bill B
Until that alledge NFL strike happens. Then what are NFL fans going to do? The money makers of NASCAR (Frances) are probably just grinning and didn't count on this to happen in their wildest of dreams. A strike in football means more fans to NASCAR. Maybe.

LOL! It must be a woman thing, because when I saw the article, I immediately counted the months. And as I saw on Twitter by Landon Cassill, I won't if the baby will be named, "Chase" if it's a boy.

There is definately something in the NASCAR water. Either that or that Octane 95 makes for some strong swimmers! ;)

CHEERS to the hubz last night when trying to reference that 'one racer'. 'The one that's just starting'. Uh Danica? 'Yeah her'.

Carol, CHEERS for the link to the Helio picture. I never would have found it by myself.

JEERS for sending the snow and cold to us (CT). I can not take these 60mph gusts that last all day.

CHEERS to the wonderful news for Jimmie and Chandra!! Congrats to the parents to be!

CHEERS to all of those within the Nascar community who are celebrating the birth of little ones.

I second that CHEERS to celebrating the life DJ Richardson. CHEERS to all of those offering support to his family and close friends.

CHEERS to Daytona! Looking so forward to it!

JEERS to Sugars stoke... but CHEERS to her being almost back to herself!

@ts20freak,
Actually, I doubt that most NFL fans will embrace NASCAR in the event of a strike. I am sure there will be some but as we have learned from Brian's attempt to force a playoff system with NASCAR's Chase, the two sports are apples and oranges.
(Although I must admit that the hockey strike in 96-97 is what first made me resort to getting seriously into NASCAR.)

Bill B,
I fixed the spacing. It's a weird glitch that happens if I don't do things in a certain order, and apparently I failed when I did some rearranging of my paragraphs. :-)

CHEERS to all the good stuff Carol just wrote about, and best wishes for an oomph two thousand ten racing season!

About the NASCAR four times in a row Champion making a baby together with his lovely wife, CHEERS!

I guess we can rule out "Glen," then.

@jem6973: I feel your pain, even though I stopped subscribing to them when they were "Winston Cup Scene." These are hard times for just about everyone who makes a living turning dead trees into information. Stock Car Racing magazine is long gone, as are many local/regional trade papers.

The Interwebs are fine, as far as they go, but it's hard to paste an e-zine article about your son's first win into a scrapbook, or for a kid to cut a picture out of nascar.com to tack onto his bulletin board -- to say nothing about being able to catch up on racing news in...ummm...the place I usually bring a newspaper....

Trying to slow down the march of progress, I remain....

@giluvracing,
The problem with printed media that is geared toward news and current events is timeliness. Even if newspapers were free (like the internet) they are useless if the news they report has already been circulating on the internet for 48+ hours. This why newspapers are folding all over the country,,, by the time they get to your doorstep they are obsolete.

As for putting your kid's story in a scrapbook or on a bulliten board or reading the article in your favorite "reading room" most people do have printers. Just print the story out and you have a hardcopy. Considering that in most cases you will only want to print a hardcopy for 1 out of a 1000 stories/articles, and that the cost of printing out a handful of articles a year is cheaper (not to mention greener) than a yearly subscription, you really aren't losing anything.

Don't get me wrong, I am old school and hate change too so I miss having the actual newspaper as well. But like you said, you can't stop the wheels of progress even it sometimes that "progress" is debatable.

@giluvracing

I stopped getting WCS when I would receive two at a time (I guess that has more to do with USPS). And well I just let NI go when I was reading what was in the magazine online first.

But I still like to have a physical article in my hand, like I want the cd to look at.

I guess what I'm saying is I'm oldschool

Well, it may come as no surprise that, in addition to the 25-plus years of NASCAR videos, my basement also holds decades worth of boxed-up magazines. I have Car and Driver, Automobile (from the beginning), Speedway Illustrated (ditto), Stock Car Racing (to the end) and Open Wheel (give or take a dozen or so issues). There are also a few years of Sprint Car and Midget in the mix.

I don't know why. I guess I always thought that, some day, I'd like to look at them again...history, y'know?

There is a sort of permanence to a newspaper or magazine article. The fact that some publisher somewhere chose to commit one's facts or opinions to print, to me, seems more powerful than, "OK, go slap that up on the Web for a few days."

Don't forget that one of the best things about the Barrett Jackson Auctions is listening to Mike Joy and how darned much he knows about and loves cars! Steve Magnante is not too shabby either.

Catch it in HD if you can!

@giluvracing,
RE: "I guess I always thought that, some day, I'd like to look at them again."

It sounds good but what's the chance you'll have time to ever set eyes on the majority of them again.

I understand though. I have my share of "history" saved up too. I just wish there were more time to enjoy it but the damn present keeps me too busy to review the past.

Well, Bill B.... I guess, at some point, I'm going to retire, through disability or otherwise, and I'm going to need something to look at besides Judge Judy all day.

Or...some day the tree-huggers will take over fully, and racing, in their perpetual tunnel-vision, will need to be outlawed. At that point, pretty much the only person watching (or reading about) racing will be....me.

Or...my nephew, grandkids, or other descendents may develop an appetite for the stuff -- and all the documentation that they need would be right there in the basement.

Or...maybe I could find a nice library or museum or whatever to donate them to...for a bit of a tax write-off.

Or...the recycle bin will have a REALLY good day, some day....

@giluvracing,
All good reasons!

Like I said, I also have a lot of things I hope to revisit if I am lucky enough to make it to retirement.

It's a women thing because I also did the math. My first thought was guess he wasn't worrying that much about the chase. ;)

The real show was the Russo and Steele auction because of the weather and the fact they had THE ONLY Tucker convertible in existence! I do like how BJ took the trucks and secured the tents with them to keep the tents from blowing away. I was surprised to see there was a race truck that Shrub used in the truck series on sale at the Russo and Steele auction.
