I Was Just Wonderin'...

Will Kyle Busch Get Pummelled?

Kyle Busch and Joey Logano will be hosting WWE Raw on Monday. Now lest you think I've gone to the dark side, I actually had to ask Josh what that was about. I'll be honest, my question was, "I wonder if there's any chance someone might pummel Kyle Busch." Always happy to humor me, he replied, "Maybe." And in case you're wondering, no, I won't be watching. Even if the episode of Top Gear is one I've seen before, I can assure you I'll enjoy it more.

I wonder how much revenue will be lost for the Waldorf Astoria this November when the NASCAR crowd doesn't show up. And I wonder what the cancel policy is for fans who made their reservations a year or more in advance only to find out they'd be there without NASCAR.

I wonder how I could get a shipment of Martinsville hot dogs delivered to Rob on Saturday afternoon. Maybe FedEx would deliver?

Kimi might come to NASCAR?! Not likely. But he said he could if he wanted. Course in that same breath he also said he's not one of the biggest fans of NASCAR. It's okay, my Finnish friend, it'll grow on you! I wonder how he'd fit in in Charlotte, North Carolina.

NASCAR has announced a new advertising campaign with 90-second ads in movie theaters. If they're so interested in attracting the movie-going crowd to become race fans, I wonder what they were thinking when they so heartily endorsed Talladega Nights.

In yesterday's accident, I wonder why Michael Waltrip was given a field sobriety test, but the motorcycle driver (who admitted he'd been drinking) was not.

In the greatest of all ironies, the Los Angeles Times has a headline, "NASCAR Chase Has Created a Big Boring Monster." I wonder if writer Tim Haddock has ever been to his "local" track to watch a race. I think I saw him in the grandstand two weeks ago. He was dressed as an empty chair.

I wonder how Humpy Wheeler is spending his birthday today. And I wonder what Bruton got him for a gift.

I wonder if Rick Hendrick would let Junior take the 88 if he moved to RCR. And I wonder if Richard Childress' support and encouragement of Dale, Jr. will have the same effect that Dale Earnhardt was able to have on Michael Waltrip. Could it be there's just nobody at Hendrick that believes in Junior?

And speaking of Junior, he says his next crew chief is going to have to be a dictator. Again (as I often do), I wonder why Tony Eury, Sr. isn't top on the list of guys they're considering for the job. He has the authority of a father figure, the "because I said so" attitude, and the knowledge of a top-notch crew chief. Like undiscovered medicinal plants in the rainforest, I think Pops Eury is the yet-undiscovered magic that can put Junior on top.

And one more thing I was just wonderin'...

I wonder how Chad Knaus feels knowing that the producers of HBO Sports are hoping to capture the moment when he breaks and snaps at Jimmie Johnson to "get these cameras out of here!" They'll film more than 1,000 hours in order to produce four 30-minute episodes of 24/7 focusing on Jimmie and his racing career. Somehow I have a feeling there wouldn't be any kind of "snap", but rather a firm word and a glare that would strike fear enough in the cameraman that he'd think it was his own idea to turn and walk away.

I was wondering with the recent announcment (recent as in an hour ago) by naming Tony Eury Jr as crew chief for the #5 JRM car replacing Brian Kempe that means that Eury Jr is no longer a crew chief for HMS?

And I was wonderin' the same thing... why Tony Eury Sr. was not on top of the crew chief list. Maybe of course Eury Sr likes wheere he is in as #88 Nationwide series crew chief.

Was wondering what Kyle and Joey were thinking agreeing to guest host WWE Raw. And if this brings back the comparasions between NASCAR and Raw again. And I for one am seriously hoping for some in-ring action for one or both of them.

I was wondering if JGR had thought to be an in-ring clause in the contracts. Would it come before or after extra-ciriccular racing activities?

Would be nice to see Dale Jr over at RCR... of course right now RCR is kind of a struggling ship. Hope they get that turned around.

And finally, I was just wondering why I'm sending out Christmas idea lists to family. Is it really that time of the year again? Already? Will someone slow down the calendar.

I don't think Rick Hendrick would have a problem letting the 88 go. There is no way he can be attached to it. That number was for Jr not HMS.

I don't think Eury Sr is interested in being a crew chief in the Sprint Cup series. I don't blame him. Too much pressure. Too high profile. Too much crap that goes along with being a crew chief.

I read somewhere, earlier today, that Tony Sr. wasn't interesting in returning to the squirrel-cage that is Sprint Cup. He seems quite content, and he has certainly earned such contentment, with his level of participation in the Nationwide Series.

But, this would be the crew chief that Junior would need. Someone who was older than he, that had led successful teams in the past, preferably with a variety of drivers. You know, kind of like a Harry Hyde/Tim Richmond deal. Tim and Harry were at each other's throats for the first half of the 1986 season. Then, it finally dawned on Harry what Tim was saying on the radio. Once Harry figured that out, they were unbeatable.

Dale Jr. needs someone like that. Someone who can listen to him on the radio, and translate his random comments into precise adjustments. But who?

I know HMS likes to hire and promote from within, but this economy and the current Silly Season may give them an opportunity to raid a shrinking/closing team for some key personnel. Wave a little cash in the right direction, and they could very well steal someone from RCR, RPM, or wherever. They might even, for the right money, lure an Andy Petree or Tim Brewer from the TV truck.

There is probably a dozen crew chiefs right now who wouldn't mind taking a run at a championship, with an Earnhardt at the wheel. Go forth, Rick, and find the right one!

My 10yr old son alerted me immediately of the news that two Nascar drivers were going to be on Raw, Monday night! My son loves that stuff... me, not so much, but I will be watching... because that is sure to be very comical!

Ewwww.... just the mention of those nasty bright red Martinsville Hotdogs makes my skin crawl!

I think Rick would have no problem letting Jr have the 88, if he decided to go to RCR.

The comment: "Could it be there's just nobody at Hendrick that believes in Junior?"
No one at DEI believed in Jr, now no one at HMS believes in Jr. This cycle non belief really must stop. *rolls eyes* Maybe when Jr decided to believe in himself, then things will turn around for him.

I doubt HBO will catch Chad Knaus "snap" at Jimmie...but that would be funny to see.

I was just wonderin'

How long until North Carolina and NASCAR take away Michael Waltrip's ability to drive a motor vehicle. Mikey ran away when he was loaded and flipped his last vehicle. The reason the guy on the Harley wasn't given a sobriety test, he was injured and he wasn't making an illegal U-turn. Thank God that he is retiring. Buffy probably left him just so she and her kids would not die in an auto accident.

I was just wondering.... How does Elliot Sadler still have a job? It's rare that he runs as high as the top 20, but when he does he's sure to cause a wreck.

What has Jr done at HMS to have anyone believe in him?

Lots and lots of hype and little to show for it will kill morale faster than a real blood sucking Vampire showing up at a tweens Twilight party...

It's raining in Martinsville. Looks like they'll line up by points... same thing happened last year.

Jimmie will be on the pole and have the first pit stall... same thing happened last year.

Jimmie will win the championship... same thing happened last year.

Hi Carol,

You wrote: "In yesterday's accident, I wonder why Michael Waltrip was given a field sobriety test, but the motorcycle driver (who admitted he'd been drinking) was not."

Probably because the motorcyclist did nothing wrong, whereas Waltrip made an improper U-turn in front of oncoming traffic (and I'm guessing either Waltrip admitted it, or there were witnesses or it was otherwise obvious). As a motorcyclist myself, I can say it's very common for idiots to make left turns or u-turns in front of motorcycles. Incidently, it takes more than a couple of beers to blow an 0.6, and 0.6 is legally DUI in many jurisdictions, altho not in N Carolina. Why are we not condemning Waltrip for his irresponsible behavior that injured an innocent man?

Also you wrote: "Kimi might come to NASCAR?! Not likely. But he said he could if he wanted."

That would be interesting, actually. In recent times we've seen drivers with experience in dirt cars have considerable success in NASCAR (as opposed to those from a formula car background). Kimi has experience in rally cars, which is the closest you're going to get to dirt cars in Europe. I wonder if he'd be another Tony Stewart if he chose to try stock cars.

And you wrote: "I wonder why Tony Eury, Sr. isn't top on the list of guys they're considering for the job."

I'll hazard a guess that Eury Sr doesn't want it. Either because he doesn't want the stress and travel that goes with the job, or he doesn't want to upstage his son by succeeding where Eury Jr did not.

@giluvracing (#3):

I think Tim Brewer is out-of-touch, and would not work as a crew chief today. Petree, on the other hand is a very interesting idea.

What Junior really needs is someone like Junior (Johnson, of course) - an old-school, take no guff sort of guy who'll tell him to stop layin down and get up on the wheel whenever he looks to be slowing down.

I wonder if I get this week's jackass award since they got qualifying in without rain. I'll be glad to wear that award for the week. It was worth it not to have the grid set by default (points).

The crew chief is not the problem. Jr just needs to get away from it all and relax and I mean truely relax. Let go of the death of his dad and other stuff and return to the track loose and ready!

For what it's worth, I don't think it's Junior that's holding onto the death of his dad. I think it's the fans and the media (I'm guilty of it myself). If we could just forget who he is, what he's been through, and let go of the expectations we may have had because of his family name and just let him be a regular guy who races cars, he might be able to get past all the other "stuff".

I wonder why RCR and HMS don't just do a driver swap...Harvick for Junior, and HMS keeps a % of souvenir sales for the remainder of Junior's contract. Think about it - it's perfect - Harvick finally has an opportunity to drive the equipment he needs to do well, and will be "Happy" again, and Junior gets all the love and support he craves .... (not to mention a built in excuse for his performance). It might even be the impetus for Childress to improve his equipment and teams.

A trade between the 2 teams would solve everyone's problems...

I *will* be watching Raw on Monday (pro wrestling is one of my dirty little pleasures--and yes, I know, it's fixed, I enjoy it for the performance aspects), and I hope that the WWE's incompetent writing staff at least knows enough to know that Kyle's a natural "heel" and writes him as a big ol' jerk who loves to antagonize the good guys. (Yes, the guest host stuff is all 100% scripted, because Vince McMahon decided that failed soap opera and sitcom writers knew how to write wrestling better than, y'know, *wrestlers*, and they decided that one of the problems was All That Ad Libbing On The Microphone...)

Ideally, I'd write it as basically Kyle as the gleefully nasty guy--the one who relishes getting booed--and Logano as a clean-cut nice/fun guy, with the two of them bickering the whole time, but I don't trust the Writer Monkeys (TM Chris Jericho, Pat. Pend.) to figure out that's how best to use those two...

Of course, if it were to rain at Martinsville today, Vince would be in trouble, since the show is being held out on the West Coast...
